Unleash your creativity!

About Textiles & Embroidery Dumfries..

Cross-stitch, applique, free motion embroidery - we love it all...

Textiles & Embroidery Dumfries is a group of local people keen to promote and preserve embroidery and needlecraft. Through our workshops and events, we provide a friendly and supportive environment for individuals to explore their creativity and expand their skills.

Join our community and

discover a world of possibilities.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, Textiles & Embroidery Dumfries welcomes you to be part of our  community.

Whilst attending our group you can use kits, do traditional embroidery, experiment with different techniques, or simply complete your own mending/knitting!

Members skills include hand embroidery and free machine embroidery, and the fabrics used are endless, from traditional calico to a vast variety of other materials, even creating bespoke backgrounds and stitching into them.  All aspects of textile art are covered within the group - dry and wet felting, printing, and painting onto fabric, using hot foil, soldering irons, hot air guns, etc.  A whole host of interesting ideas.

We also have Experimental and Show and Tell Days, as well as an activity called Corners where 4 members describe their skills to others in more depth. There are lots of experienced members and the sharing of ideas is wonderful for new stitchers.

A bit more about us...

The running of the group.
  • The group is run by a Committee.  Anyone interested in joining this may express an interest at the AGM.
  • Committee posts are sometimes shared.
  • There is an extensive Embroidery and Stitch Library of books and magazines which is free, beautifully catalogued and with detailed lending records.
  • From time to time there is a Sales Table - Members are asked to bring items to sell for charity donation. Good quality items and books only please.   If your items are not sold, please take them home.
  • There is an annual outing, visiting somewhere outside our area to stitch related exhibitions or other interesting places.

Experimental Days

These are arranged by consent of members. This is an optional activity.  From within our membership, someone will tutor a session in something they have been shown at Summer School or at classes attended elsewhere.

Summer School at Stirling

  • If you enjoy the art of stitch and textile, this is a great chance to indulge your passion and enjoy the company of likeminded people.  It is an opportunity to learn new skills or try something you have not done or wish to further explore, e.g., an embroidery style by a skilled practitioner.
  • One 4-day course and 3 two-day courses are offered.  You can attend all 4 days, or for just 2 days.
  • The date is always the last week of August starting on the Wednesday and finishing on the Sunday.  It takes place at Stirling University Campus.
  • Student accommodation is available at a range of prices and food is included if you want it.
  • Sessions run from 9am to 9 pm with breaks for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served from 7.45 am approx. All groups from Scotland can attend.
  • At present Summer School runs with 4 Tutors offering courses over 4 days. The maximum in a class is 15.
  • Some members attend for a 2-day course and are replaced by further members for the next 2 days. Some members do a 2-day course with one Tutor and swap to another Tutor for a further 2 days. Some members do a 4-day course or 2 x2 days courses with the same Tutor.
  • Tutors are invited from the South of Great Britain to give members in the North a chance to take a class with a Textile Artist nearer to home.
  • Textile Artists are invited with a variety of skills and abilities in Stitch and Embroidery. There are traditional as well as fun classes to do and try.
  • Beginners are welcome.

Stitch Fairs and Exhibitions

Information about these is announced as appropriate, and usually members attend together. There are fairs held in Harrogate and events in Kirkcudbright, for example.

 Christmas Lunch in December.

This is currently held at the Mabie House just outside Dumfries.  There is a choice of a 3-course meal, with a variety of options.   A speaker is arranged for the event.   There is a costed price for this and usually a themed stitch competition judged by our members.   Information about how to produce an item for this competition is announced well in advance.

Triennial Exhibition.

As a group, we join the ‘Weavers, Quilters and Embroiderers’ to stage a Spring Exhibition every three years.  Recently this has been held at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries.  Members are asked to submit several items to display if they wish, and to participate in a stewarding rota on site.
